World class sites yielding pristine fruit
Alder Springs Vineyard
This impeccably farmed and highly esteemed vineyard is located outside the remote hamlet of Laytonville in Northern Mendocino County. First planted in 1993, this 140 acre mountain site rests at an elevation of 2,700 feet. Grapes grow on steep hillsides in well drained, low vigor soils of decomposing sandstone at densities approaching 3,300 vines per acre. Yields are exceptionally low, with most blocks producing 2.0 tons/acre. The Pinot Noir is planted primarily to Dijon clones 114 and 115, with smaller amounts of 113, 667 and 777. The Chardonnay is comprised of Dijon clones 76, 96 and 95. A unique combination of inland and coastal weather influences helps to create wide swings in daily temperatures, providing optimal conditions for growing cool climate, Burgundian varietals. Apart from the pristine fruit, this vineyard has garnered a reputation for being one the most immaculately groomed sites anywhere in the world. Legend has it that owner Stu Bewley can sometimes be seen using tweezers to remove lesser quality berries from individual bunches—the attention to detail is unsurpassed. We are humbled and grateful to be able use the fruit from this amazing source to produce our wines.
